What is Online Security for Websites and more

Online security. It’s More important than ever…

Spam, hacking, the list goes on. Malicious attempts to get your vital information is on the rise, protect yourself!

Spam, Hacking, and Malicious attempts to get into your email, computers, and social media accounts. Capstone receives reports daily from customers and our security vendor about phishing and other hacking attempts.

TWO RECENT EXAMPLES:

    • An attempt to get into the client’s RoundCube (email client) account.

    • A phishing email claiming that Stripe (Credit Card processor) needed additional information. Both were spam attempts to get clients access information.

WHY IS ONLINE SECURITY IMPORTANT:

Cyberattacks cost U.S. businesses $10.2 billion in 2022. (source, FBI , via USA Today, “Cybersecurity statistics in 2024”, 2.26.24). Attacks on small businesses are on the rise with the average cost of a successful cyber attack at $384,598 in 2019.

WHO IS AFFECTED:

EVERYONE; the size of the business does not matter.

Gone are the days when service professionals were limited to word-of-mouth referrals and neighborhood flyers. With service-based eCommerce, you can share your skills, and service offerings with a wider audience. Suddenly, you’re not just the local business; you could be a regional, maybe even national, go-to pro!

HOW TO MINIMIZE PHISHING & HACKING:

PASSWORDS:

    • if possible use a 10-digit password, with numbers, special characters, and upper and lower case letters. Please don’t be one of those “My password is: PASSWORD” folks.

    • change passwords often, most experts recommend once per month.

    • keep passwords in a safe place, consider using a Password Manager.

BOOK A CALL REQUEST FOR HELP WITH YOUR ONLINE SECURITY NEEDS!

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER

Access bank accounts, health portals, or other important websites from “guest” networks at coffee shops, and libraries.

EMAIL:

If you receive requests for business/personal information, 99% of these requests are phishing attacks trying to get information. Don’t reply, or click on them. If you are unsure of the validity, call the sender to confirm it is a “legitimate” request.

PASSWORD POLICY:

If you have employees, develop a policy about online access and password management. Determine who controls access to your online assets. Communicate how often you expect passwords to be updated.

BREACH PLAN:

If your business is hacked, how will you handle it? Who, and how will you contact suppliers, vendors, banks, etc. to determine the extent of the breach? What is your backup plan if your computers are out of service?

Website Security:

Ensure you have the appropriate SSL certificate for your website. Utilize Malware software and be prepared to restore backups.
